Australia Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 489

A 4-year provisional visa for skilled workers who are nominated by a State/Territory government or sponsored by a relative living in a designated area of Australia. This visa is a pathway to permanent residency through Subclass 887.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for Subclass 489, you must:
• Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receive an invitation to apply
• Be sponsored by an eligible relative or nominated by a State/Territory Government
• Score at least 65 points on the Skilled Migration Points Test
• Be aged between 18 and 44 years
• Meet health and character requirements
• Meet competent English standards
• Pass a Skills Assessment in an eligible occupation

Sponsorship Options

🟢 By a Relative in a Designated Area
Your sponsor must be an:
• Australian Citizen
• Permanent Resident
• Eligible New Zealand Citizen
Eligible relatives include:

  • Parents

  • Brothers & Sisters

  • Uncles & Aunts

  • First Cousins

  • Nephews & Nieces

  • Grandparents
     

You must live 2 years and work 12 months in a designated regional area to apply for permanent residency through Subclass 887.

🟢 By a State/Territory Government
Each Australian State or Territory publishes its own list of in-demand occupations.
Requirements may include:

  • Higher English proficiency

  • Specific work experience

  • Specialized skills

Where You Can Apply From

You can apply from: • Inside Australia (must hold a substantive visa or a bridging visa A, B, or C)
• Outside Australia

A bridging visa will be granted if applying from within Australia, allowing you to stay while the visa is processed.

Family Members You Can Include

• Spouse or de facto partner (including same-sex partners)
• Dependent children
• Other dependent family members (e.g., financially dependent parents)

Note: Partner and dependent children can be added after lodging, but other dependents must be added before.

Duration & Conditions

• 4-year provisional visa
• Live, work, and study only in designated regional areas

Depending on the type of sponsorship:
🔹 Relative Sponsorship: Live in Designated Areas (e.g., Canberra, Melbourne, Gold Coast)
🔹 State/Territory Nomination: Live in Regional or Low Population Growth Areas

You and your family must enter Australia before health and police checks expire (if granted offshore).
